Only Keralite middlemen arrested in trafficking of women to Dubai During the last five years, only 12 victims managed to escape from the clutches of the racketeers and return home. Of them, only eight women came forward and recorded their statement.

Kochi: Keralite victims, who managed to escape from the Dubai sex racket, have revealed harrowing tales about their life in captivity.

It is suspected that at least 500 Keralite women were among those who were forced into sex trade by a vast network of human trafficking and prostitution racket based in Dubai. During the last five years, only 12 victims managed to escape from the clutches of the racketeers and return home. Of them, only eight women came forward and recorded their statement, officials said.

Though the CBI, which investigated the case, received vital information about some of the victims trapped in the emirates of Sharjah and Ajman, the agency is still waiting for permission from the central government to conduct further investigation.

The CBI has been able to arrest only one Keralite middlemen after two years of investigation.

From the depositions:

Victim 1: Aged 18 from Thiruvananthapuram

I was taken abroad on the promise of a domestic maid's job and a salary of Rs 25,000. Once I landed there, I realized I was cheated. They gave me a passport at the airport. But apart from the photo, the name and details were not mine. I was abused by up to 50 people every day. Once I escaped and landed back in Mumbai, I was arrested for the fake passport.

Victim 2: Aged 28 from Pathanamthitta

Up to 80 people abused me during my house arrest. I had pleaded with Keralite 'customers' to help me out. One of them called up my husband and informed him of my plight. I managed to escape after my husband informed the police.

Victim 3: Aged 34 from Idukki

Fake documents do not pose a problem at the airport in Kochi. The agents have 'connections' to board people on fake documents. Once I landed in Sharjah, I was made to sit inside the car's boot space to avoid the police. I was housed in a five-room apartment with one woman in each room. The rooms were locked from outside. They provided food and clothes. Their people used to guard the flat and collect money from customers. Finally, I fell ill.

Victim 4: Aged 40 from Thrissur

I got cheated right at the airport. I didn't have the money to give the travel agent. He took me to a hotel room and abused me before handing over the ticket. But a bigger tragedy was awaiting me.
