Volleyball star Jimmy George's coach Kalavoor Gopinath passes away

Alappuzha: Veteran volleyball coach and industrialist Kalavoor Gopinath passed away here on Wednesday. He was 82.

A former coach of the national volleyball team, Gopinath had trained eminent players, including Jimmy George.

He started his career as a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force at the age of 18 and was a part of the air force's volleyball team for years.

After retiring from the air force in 1969, he was appointed a coach at the G V Raja Kerala Sports Council. The air force had honoured him by naming its stadium at Avadi in Chennai after him.

He was also active in coir industry and social work. He was also a leader of the SNDP Yogam. He is survived by wife Pinky, sons Binu and Biju and daughter Beena.
