Biju, 42, and his wife Sasikala, 35, were killed by R Sudheesh, 39, after the couple reportedly objected when he abused them as they passed by his house. Sudheesh was later caught.
Sudheesh has been arrested for the double murder that took place at Pallarimangalm, around 2.45 pm, on Monday.
According to the police, Biju and Sasikala were returning from Mavelikkara with son Devan and as they passed the house of Sudheesh, the accused unleashed abuses at them. Biju reacted in anger and as the couple entered their house, Sudheesh rushed in with an iron rod and attacked Biju. Sasikala was also attacked. As they rushed out on to the street, Sudheesh followed them and assaulted again. He then smashed their heads with bricks several times.
Devan cried out and informed neighbours who gathered to rush the wounded couple to hospital. It was hard moving them into an ambulance because the attack was so brutal that the legs were almost severed. Sasikala died on the spot itself, while Biju died at the Kayamkulam taluk hospital.
Biju's elder child Devika, 11, was at a kin's place in Mullikulangara at the time of the murder.
Neighbours said Sudheesh was in the habit of quarrelling with Biju and was arrested once for intruding into the deceased's house and smashing property. He had purchased a shed in which Biju had lived earlier.
