Kochi: The continuous rain across the state has forced many district collectors to announce holiday for educational institutions, especially schools. However, taking advantage of the situation, a few are creating fake web pages and spreading false news even in the name of the district collector. Ernakulam collector Muhammad Y Safirulla warned against the fake news and fake pages spreading in his name.

On his official Facebook page, Safirulla said that strict action would be initiated against “those who are making fake Facebook account in the name of the collector and spreading fake news about holiday. I have also directed police to initiate action against those who create fake account in the name of the district collector and spreading fake news,” he said.

Safirulla also asked the users to follow only his official Facebook page for authentic updates. As rains intensified, it has become normal for the public, especially students to directly ask the collectors through their Facebook pages, whether there is a holiday or not.

The Ernakulam collector also apologised for the delayed announcement of holiday, on Wednesday, even as rain intensified. “Sorry for the late information. The monsoon prediction was that the rains would subside by night. However, there were continuous rain all night in some areas. I also had to consider that schools have been closed for 6 days already this year so far,” he wrote.
