Alappuzha: Authorities have declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Kuttanad taluk in Alappuzha on Monday. Kuttanad was one of the worst-affected in the rain fury. All schools in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts that are functioning as relief camps will also be given a day off.
Educational institutions, other than professional colleges, in Vazhappally, Kurichi and Payyippadu panchayats and Changanasery municipality in Kottayam district will not function on Monday.
Most educational institutions in Alappuzha, one of the worst-affected districts, did not function last week.
On Saturday, a central team led by union minister Kiren Rijiju had visited Kerala and promised central assistance to deal with 'unprecedented rains and floods.' Rs 80 crore was sanctioned to the state as initial aid. However, Rijiju had not visited Kuttanad, triggering a row.
Leader of the opposition Ramesh Chennithala, who visited the flood-ravaged Kuttanad, blamed the state government for not responding to the situation.
He alleged that not a single minister had visited the area till Saturday though Alappuzha has three state ministers.
Alappuzha district is home to state PWD minister G Sudhakaran, food minister P Thilothaman and finance minister Thomas Isaac.
However, Sudhakaran, who arrived with the central team, had dismissed the allegations, saying the government has done everything it can.
