Thiruvananthapuram: Armed with spray paints and brushes in their hands, two youngsters are doing their bit to beautify roadsides and corners that make for common garbage dump sites in the capital city.

Jobin Prakash, a native of Nalanchira, and Sarath Prem, who hails from Kilimanoor, are on a mission to identify ‘black spots’ (unofficial dump sites) and dirtied sites before clearing the trash and changing the entire face of the area with their beautiful paintings.

So far, the duo has transformed more than ten public walls and spaces across the district.

What stirred them into action was the sight of the area near the St Goretti’s Higher Secondary School which was gradually turning into a piling trash yard. They approached the school authorities with a proposal to clean and paint the area, and the response was positive.

Jobin and Sarath, both alumni of the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, washed and painted the entire area, turning the stinking garbage stretch into a clean spot. Youngsters in the locality also joined their drive and helped paint the walls.

“We hope that the paintings will make people think twice before littering and encourage them to use a dustbin instead,” Jobin said.

People now actually stop by to appreciate the art on the walls.

Similar clean-up and beautification drives were undertaken by the two in Ulloor and several areas in neighbouring districts giving them a much needed make-over.
