Thiruvananthapuram: Government employees and teachers who failed to show up for work on all-India strike held on January 8 and 9 will be paid salary for those days. The state government has decided to notify the two working days as 'dies-non' so that the pay is not lost. Moreover, two leave will be adjusted against the dies-non, which in legal parlance means 'a day on which no legal business can be done'.

The order from the Department of Communications and Public Relations under the chief minister says employees can apply for available leaves, including casual leave, for the two days.

‘Dies-non’ was invoked since the ruling dispensation was in concord with the organisations that called the strike against the central government. Only 111 and 115 employees of the 4,860-strong secretariat workforce showed up on January 8 and 9, respectively.

Functioning of government offices across the state was affected during the two-day strike. The state spends Rs 2,500 crore on salary a month. The average for two days comes to Rs 166 crore.
