Police fail to nail Shyamala as Sajan's diary mentions no names

Kannur: The police team investigating the suicide of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) entrepreneur Sajen Parayil at Anthoor is yet to unearth evidence against Municipal Chairperson P K Shyamala. Officials feel that the case would be weakened as Sajen’s diary, which mentioned the travails he had to undergo while setting up a convention centre at Anthoor, does not name anybody for having caused his plight.

Meanwhile, the municipality has initiated measures to grant the sanction to open the convention centre.

On the other hand, Sajen’s family is still firm on its stand against Shyamala. Sajen’s wife Beena reiterated her statement against the municipal chairperson. Beena had earlier accused Shyamala of harassing Sajen regarding the convention centre leading to his suicide. But with no sufficient evidence to support Beena’s charge, police feel that the case cannot be pursued in that direction.

Sajen’s diary and a note written by him were found from his house during a check on Monday. Though the diary does not mention any names, Sajen has described the harassment he had to face at the hands of the officials. The diary also refers to the help Sajen received from CPM leader P Jayarajan and others.

The investigating team, which is now engaged in collecting evidence, is expected to question more people. Statements will be taken again from the municipality officials who have been placed under suspension. Shyamala may be grilled only later.

In a related development, the police team led by DySP V A Krishnadas inspected the relevant files at Anthoor municipal office and the documents at Partha convention centre that Sajen built. The new municipal secretary M Sureshan who took temporary charge on Monday has also started checks to grant the licence to the convention centre. Instructions have been given to issue the sanction as soon as possible. It is felt that the delay occurred owing to lapses on the part of the former secretary and other local body officials.

The secretary M K Gireesh, meanwhile, approached the High Court urging it to stay his arrest till an anticipatory bail plea moved by him was disposed of. However, Justice B Sudheendra Kumar rejected the plea. Sajen’s wife Beena, the complainant, has been made a party in the case. Gireesh had said in his anticipatory bail plea that he neither had a direct role in Sajen’s suicide nor engaged in any malpractice. The court is expected to take up the bail plea again on Wednesday.
