Maradu, Kochi: The state government and civic authorities here are on their toes as they prepare to demolish illegal flats in the Maradu area of Kerala's Ernakulam district in the wake of an apex court censure over delay in taking requisite action. Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose inspected the flat precincts on Monday, a day after the state government ordered the Kochi Municipal Corporation to carry out the Supreme Court order to demolish illegal flats immediately.
Corporation secretary Arif Khan received additional chief secretary’s order, through Deputy Secretary N Sajukumar, to start demolition procedure urgently under the leadership of the district collector.
The corporation has to take necessary action and respond by September 18.
The civic body has been assured all government assistance for carrying out the demolition. It has been asked to invite urgent tenders from agencies for safe demolition.
The occupants of the flats have to be rehabilitated in consultation with collector, the order stated.
The order also warns of disciplinary action against municipal authorities if it is not taken up with utmost seriousness.
Corporation chairperson TH Nadeera has convened a special meeting, cancelling Onam holidays. Its engineering section was working yesterday.
Monday’s steering committee meet is expected to call an emergency council today itself, the chairperson said.
The Supreme Court had ordered demolition of all 5 flats built flouting rules within September 20 and asked the chief secretary to appear before it on 23. This state government directive follows the recent SC ultimatum.
Questionnaire for residents
Information on all occupants is being collected with a questionnaire circulated in the flats. The questions include that on availability of another house, information on income, job and mental state.
The survey precedes the preparation of a report to be submitted before the Supreme Court.
