Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, which resumed services on Wednesday, faced a loss of Rs 60 lakh.

The state transport service which generated only Rs 16.64 per kilometre had incurred expenses of Rs 25.68 per kilometre. Fuel expenses alone costed Rs 20 lakh for KSRTC.

In some districts, few private buses too conducted services on Thursday.

About 1,338 KSRTC ordinary buses from 92 depots began services on Wednesday. The service is from 7am to 11pm and 4pm to 7pm. Warning was issued to some unit managers after services began before the scheduled time.

Only 28 passengers are allowed in each bus in line with the social distancing norms. But even then, most buses just had 10 to 15 passengers. People, without masks, were not allowed to board. Sanitisers were provided on the buses.

The services were also affected as some parts of the bus route came under containment zones in certain districts.

Even though more than 2,600 services were conducted on Wednesday, not much revenue could be generated despite the ticket fares being increased by 50 per cent.
