CPM branch secy helps panchayat vice-president divert foodgrains for flood victims, expelled for a year

Kuttanad: The vice-president and the CPM branch secretary of the LDF-ruled Neelamperoor panchayat have been accused of diverting foodgrains that were meant to be distributed to flood victims in the area.

CPM Neelamperoor branch secretary K P Sukumaran has been removed from the party for a year after food grains that were to be delivered to flood victims were found in his house.

The incident took place in the third ward of Neelamperoor panchayath. The Kainadi police have started an investigation on the basis of a complaint lodged by local people.

Foodgrains are being collected under the leadership of the panchayat members of respective wards and delivered to the public food distribution centres to help flood victims.

Prino Uthuppan, a panchayat member from the third ward who is also panchayat vice-president, pleaded guilty when locals questioned him about the shortage in food grains collected in the village office under his supervision. He admitted that he had sold food grains worth Rs 3,650. He handed over the amount to the convener of the food distribution centre in the presence of the locals.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the diverted food items were kept in Sukumaran's house. Area secretary G Unnikrishnan said Sukumaran had been expelled from the party for a year.

Vice-president Prino Uthuppan represents the Kerala Congress (Scaria) faction in the panchayat.

Panchayat president Rajani Babu said she was not aware of the incident.
