Kattappana/Alappuzha: Three Keralites drowned in an irrigation canal in Khammam district in Telangana the other day.

The deceased were identified as Vivek, 22; Sonu Parakal, 35; and Abhay, 25.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday afternoon, when a nine-member team, including Sonu, his son Sharon, Ayurveda therapists Vivek and Abhay had gone to the NSP Canal site for a pleasure trip.

(Nagarjunasagar Project is popularly referred to as NSP.)

As Sharon accidentally slipped into the canal, his father Sonu tried to rescue him, but he too fell into the water. Abhay and Vivek, who tried to rescue father-son duo, were also swept away by the swirling water. In the meantime, another youth entered the canal and rescued Sharon. But the trio could not be saved.

Alerted by the local people, the police reached the spot and launched a massive search operation. But they failed to trace the trio. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Vijayawada joined the search operation on Monday afternoon. The three bodies were retrieved in a search operation carried out after lowering the water level in the canal.

Sonu was the manager of an Ayurveda therapy centre. He was originally from Kerala but settled in Khammam.

Vivek belonged to Kakkattukada in Kanchiyar panchayat in Idukki district and Abhay was a native of Kandanattu in the 13th ward of Vayalar panchayat in Alappuzha district.

Vivek's relatives took his body to Kerala after postmortem. He is survived by mother Subhadra and siblings Vishakh and Vidya.

Abhay's body was also sent to Kerala. He is survived by mother Ambily and brothers Akshay and Santhosh.
