Covid curbs given the go-by as CPM holds mega ‘Thiruvathirakali’ with 502 dancers

Thiruvananthapuram: Flouting all latest restrictions re-imposed in view of the persisting COVID-19 pandemic, a mega ‘Thiruvathirakali’ in which 502 dancers took part was organised by CPM, the ruling party in Kerala. Among those who witnessed the event on Tuesday were politburo member M A Baby, CPM Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Anavoor Nagappan and C K Hareendran MLA.

The show, held as part of the district conference of the party which will start at Parassala on January 14, was organised by the Parassala area committee of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association.

As many as 502 dancers performed at the ground of the CSI School, Cheruvarakonam, when gatherings of more than 150 people are banned under the current pandemic rules. An equal number of viewers were also present at the ground.

Incidentally, a team of police officers had arrived on the scene during the show, but left in no time.

In practice there is no restriction on the number of people attending political programmes in the state even though the number of those attending marriages and death-related functions is strictly limited to 50. Recently several curbs on public activities were announced by the state government in view of the abrupt spurt in COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

(Thiruvathirakali is a ritualistic dance performed by women.)
