7-year-old boy dies in Malappuram, Shigella suspected

Malappuram: The death of a seven-year-old boy at Puthanathani here is suspected to be caused by Shigella infection.

The boy had been admitted with diarrhea, which is a common symptom of Shigella bacterial infection.

The health department has reportedly set up a rapid response team to tackle the infection that is contagious.

Besides diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, fever and nausea/vomitting are common symptoms of Shigella.

The infection could happen from eating contaminated food or from water infected with the bacteria.
