The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Kerala on Tuesday, issuing a red alert for four districts, an orange alert for eight, and a yellow alert for the remaining two. Rainfall above 20 cm is expected in Thrissur, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Idukki, where the red alert is in place.

An orange alert has been issued for Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating possible rainfall between 12 and 20 cm. Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam are under a yellow alert, forecasting rainfall between 7 and 11 cm. Meanwhile, heavy rains on Tuesday morning led to waterlogging in several areas, especially in Palakkad, Thrissur, and Ernakulam.

Heavy rains cause widespread waterlogging
Heavy rainfall continued across Thrissur district until noon, causing widespread waterlogging in several areas, including Swaraj Round. Low-lying parts of the city were severely affected, with Ikkanda Warrior Road and Palace Road submerged and water entering homes near the Kole wetlands. Houses behind Aswini Hospital, Thrissur, were inundated, a recurring issue during the monsoon. Water also entered homes along Shankara Iyer Road and Aquatic Line. MG Road, a major route from Swaraj Round, is now completely waterlogged, following earlier traffic congestion.

In the Marar Road area, public outrage broke out after tarring work continued during heavy rain. Mayor M K Varghese said instructions were given to halt the work, but workers proceeded regardless.

In Chelakkara, flash floods created major disruptions. Waterlogging on the Vazhakode-Plazhi stretch and Puthur hampered traffic on the state highway as water gushed in from nearby forest areas. Parts of the National Highway at Muringoor and Mannuthy also faced severe flooding.

In Palakkad district, intense rainfall was reported in Alanallur. Waterlogging occurred near the Kannamkundu bridge on the Alanallur–Edathanattukara route, while the Thengara Kolpadam crossway in Mannarkkad was submerged. Rising water levels in the Kunthipuzha River have added to concerns.

Meanwhile, several areas in Kochi were waterlogged. In Petta, a car plunged into a drainage channel while navigating a flooded road. The driver escaped unharmed, and the vehicle was recovered after hours of effort. Local residents said they had repeatedly complained about flooding on the narrow road, but no action has been taken.

Kakki dam in Pathanamthitta to remain closed
Officials have announced that the Kakki-Anathode dam in Pathanamthitta will remain closed, despite an earlier plan to open its shutters at 11 am on Tuesday. A decrease in rainfall in the dam's catchment areas prompted the decision, according to the Executive Engineer of the Safety Division.

The IMD has also predicted that heavy rainfall will continue in the state for the next four days. It added that thunderstorms are very likely to occur along and off the Kerala coast until August 6. There is also a possibility of strong winds reaching up to 50 km/h along the coast. The weather agency has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
