Thiruvananthapuram: Dr C G Jayachandran, Associate Professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, has been appointed as the new superintendent of the institution. The order announcing his appointment was issued on Wednesday.

The development comes after the incumbent superintendent, Dr B S Sunilkumar, formally requested to be relieved of his administrative responsibilities. In a letter to the college principal, Dr Sunilkumar, a neurologist by specialisation, said that he had been unable to focus on his PhD research, departmental duties and surgical commitments since assuming the role.

The change in leadership follows a series of controversies at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Recently, Urology HoD Dr Haris Chirakkal’s remarks on equipment shortages and delayed surgeries sparked disputes within the institution. A subsequent press conference by the superintendent and principal, during which the Director of Medical Education joined over a phone call, further escalated the debate.
