Kozhikode: A CPM worker, Ramesh, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of Muhammed Aslam, an IUML supporter here earlier this month.

According to police, Ramesh was the mastermind behind the Aslam murder.

On August 12, Ramesh followed Aslam and allegedly passed on information to the killer gang, the police said.

Aslam (20), who was acquitted by the court in the murder of DYFI activist Shibin Bhaskaran of Thuneri in Nadapuram earlier this year, was killed by unidentified assailants on August 12.

He suffered severe injuries when he was attacked around 5.30 pm and was rushed to a private hospital in Kozhikode. However, he passed away later that night.

Earlier, police conducted raids at the houses of local CPM leaders, including an area secretary, in Valayam region.

According to the police, the car used by the suspected assailants was rented out for Rs 12,000 and the owner of the car was at large. The middleman who arranged the car has been detained. The murder was committed four days after the car was rented out.
