Kozhikode: The speaker of the Kerala assembly, P. Sreeramakrishnan, on Thursday said that lawyers have no authority over courts. "If there is such a misconception among the lawyers, the judiciary has the responsibility to correct it," he said while giving away the media awards of Calicut Press Club here.

People's right to information is very important in democracy. Those who try to fly above democracy should be brought down by the authorities concerned, he said.

He said there must be an end to the ongoing standoff between journalists and lawyers. There should be immediate interventions to solve the issue, Sreeramakrishnan added. He promised that efforts on his part in the capacity of an assembly speaker will always be there to settle the issue.

"Increase in the density and influence of the media will strengthen democracy. However, the volume of unknown news is more than the reported ones," he said.
