Thiruvananthapuram: DGP Jacob Thomas has found himself in muddy waters again as the Chief Secretary has denied him more time to file explanation in connection with the allegation that he had worked in a private college without permission of the government. The DGP won't be given the copies of documents he had sought. However, the official can check those documents in the secretariat, Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson said.

The Centre had sought explanation from the Chief Secretary as to what sort of probe was initiated against DGP Jacob Thomas in connection with the incident, what measures were taken, whether any explanation was sought and so on.

Meanwhile, Jacob Thomas demanded some more time to file an explanation and had sought copies of certain government documents pertaining to a similar situation in which Additional Chief Secretary Dr. K.M. Abraham had worked in a private institution. Jacob Thomas sought documents to know whether Dr. K.M. Abraham was asked to file an explanation and what action was taken against him.

The Chief Secretary has informed that those documents could not be sent and that the DGP was free to examine them by visiting the secretariat. Jacob Thomas has been asked to submit an explanation within fifteen days. The issue does not end by just returning the remuneration received from the private firm. What is important is how the DGP explains the breach of service rules, the Chief Secretary said.

There is an allegation in the government circles that the DGP has been delaying his action citing various reasons. Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson is retiring late February. It has also been alleged that Jacob Thomas was trying to delay his explanation until Jiji Thomson retired.
