Kannur: Govindachamy, who is serving a 7-year-jail term in the infamous Soumya rape-murder case at the Kannur Central Jail, has requested the police a prosthetic hand.

His demands did not end there. The prisoner also requested DGP Anil Kant, who visited the jail Tuesday, to make arrangements for 5 packets of beedi a day.

Govindachamy, who has only one hand, made the request before Anil Kant when the officer reached the jail's 10th block, where the convict has been lodged.

The DGP told Govindachamy that he won't get beedis as smoking is prohibited in prison premises.

However, the DGP told him that his request for a prosthetic hand can be considered.

This is not the first time Govindachamy is making unique requests before officials. He had once sat on strike in the jail demanding that he be served biryani everyday.

A brief timeline of Soumya murder case

The Supreme Court had in last September commuted the death sentence of Govindachamy, in the brutal rape and murder case of 23-year-old Soumya, to seven-year jail term on grounds that there was no reliable evidence to show that he pushed Soumya off the train.

Later, the top court dismissed two review petitions filed by the Kerala government and Soumya's mother challenging the decision to drop murder charges.
