This doctor has chisel and hammer in his tool box

Dr Harish Chandran Nair

Dr Harish Chandran Nair is a gynecologist who specializes in infertility treatment and 'high risk pregnancy.' He has been with Caritas Hospital in Kottayam for the past 16 years and he attends to about 1500 high-risk pregnancy cases a month.

However, the good doctor has a peculiar hobby: furniture making. He has already made tables, cupboards and cots in wood. After attending to patients in the morning, he goes to work with his chisel and hammer for about 1.5 hours. His creations could put acclaimed carpenters to shame and he is ready to spend hours on his projects.

He has purchased most of his wood-working tools from Britain and he can easily build a dining table in ten hours, a feat a good carpenter could take ten days to complete. The doctor attributes the quick turnaround time to his advanced tools. He uses laser to measure wood, which gives him correct measurements. He stays in the hostel of the hospital and also spends one hour in the evening for his hobby. His wife, Maya S. Kurup, is a pediatrician in the same hospital. The doctor who is also a good photographer, sometimes gets too involved with his hobby that his wife reminds him that he is a doctor first. His children have accepted the hidden carpenter in him.

Dr Harish, who is from Thiruvananthapuram, had started off his hobby by building a wooden pooja room for his mother, Shanthamma.
