'Thrissur youth died due to drug overdose, excessive drinking'

Bipin Das

Thrissur: The preliminary investigation into the suspicious death of an 18-year-old in Kaipamangalam, near here, confirmed that he died due to a high dose of sedatives in the form of pharmaceutical drugs and excessive drinking.

Bipin Das, a native of Kaipamangalam, who was found unconscious at his residence on Saturday, died on the way to hospital.

Three of his friends have been admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur after they complained of dizziness and vomiting.

The victim was a student of a private lift operator training center in Irinjalakuda.

Police have taken two persons into custody in connection with the incident.

Bipin’s family members found him lying in a pool of vomit in the bathroom around 6 pm on Saturday. Before losing consciousness, he told them that he was heavily drunk. Though they rushed him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police sources said that Bipin and his friends took excessive amounts of drugs used to treat epilepsy and some anti-depressant in order to enhance the high, on Friday. He indulged in binge drinking the following day. According to the doctors, as certain medicines and alcohol are toxic together, it could have led to his death.

The blood and viscera samples have been sent for forensic test to ascertain the exact cause of death, said Ernakulam (rural) assistant superintendent of police Merin Joseph.

It was his friends who revealed to the police that they had consumed pharmaceutical drugs to get high. The tablets were purchased from a medical shop at Edamuttam. They told the police that there were 26 tablets, but they took only one tablet each. The police suspect that the victim might have consumed more.

Bipin’s parents are daily-wage laborers. He has two sisters.
