Let’s get into the details.
The 85-member new Central Committee elected at the 23rd Party Congress of the CPM has chosen Sitaram Yechury as general secretary.
Yechury is taking over the reins of the party for the third consecutive term. The 69-year-old has been at the helm of the largest left party in India since April 2015.
The new Central Committee has 15 women and 17 new faces of which four are from Kerala. The 17-member politburo has three new entrants, including A Vijayaraghavan from Kerala. CS Sujatha, P, Sathidevi, P Rajeev and K N Balagopal are among the Keralite comrades who have made it to the Central Committee (CC) of the CPM for the first time.
CPM central committee member and former chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission M C Josephine died here on Sunday. She had collapsed while attending the 23rd Party Congress in Kannur.
Josephine, who entered public life through student, youth and women organisations, became a CPM member in 1978, in the aftermath of the Emergency. As per Josephine's wish her body will be donated to the Kalamassery Medical College for educational purposes.
As part of further probe into the 2017 actor assault case, top Malayalam cine artist Manju Warrier identified voice samples belonging to Dileep, his brother Anoop, and brother-in-law Suraj on Sunday. The Crime Branch summoned the actor to a hotel in Kochi as part of the further probe into the actor assault case. The questioning lasted for four hours.
The audio clips identified include those released by director Balachandrakumar who had alleged that Dileep along with his close relatives and friends, had planned to harm the investigation officers who arrested him in 2017. Manju Warrier is the former wife of actor Dileep who is a prime accused in the sensational case. Manju is also a witness in the actor assault case.
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak, till recently considered a shoo-in to replace Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister, came under the most sustained pressure since he became finance minister in 2020 after his wife, Akshata Murty, confirmed that she had non-domiciled tax status. This means Akshata, daughter of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, did not pay tax on earnings from outside the United Kingdom. While the status was legal, critics said the arrangement was incompatible with Sunak's decision to raise taxes on workers and employers from April 6 at a time when high inflation is causing a cost-of-living squeeze for many households. Sunak has moved his belongings out of Downing Street, as he desperately clung on to his post, reports said, leading to speculation on his probable resignation.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party president Shehbaz Sharif, who is tipped to be the next prime minister after the unceremonious ouster of Imran Khan, is a hard-core realist and over the years has earned the reputation of a matter-of-fact person.
Shehbaz, the 70-year-old younger brother of former three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has served as chief minister of the country's most populous and politically crucial Punjab province thrice.
This is the first time his party PML-N - especially its supremo Nawaz Sharif - agreed on his name for the post of the prime minister.
That brings us to the end of this episode. Be sure to come back tomorrow. As always, thanks for listening to Daily News Dose.
