The Suruli waterfalls that were bone dry for the past five months, at Theni district in Tamil Nadu, is in full flow with the region receiving copious monsoon rains. The cascade is at its thundering best when the waters reach Suruli from the forest regions of Kerala.
Scores of tourists from Kerala and Tamil Nadu used to visit the waterfalls but now the area is deserted due to travel restrictions put in place to check the spread of coronavirus.
As there was a heavy downpour in the forest region, the flow of water in the waterfall has increased manifold. The waterfall empties into the Mullaperiyar dam and from there the water is channelled through a canal to the Vaigai river. It is believed that Suruli was abode to 33 crore devans and 83,000 rishis, and the place is a major spiritual destination for Hindus. It is also believed that a dip in the holy river will wash away all sins. The river originates from the Meghamalai wildlife sanctuary that shares borders with the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats. The Suruli waterfall is 8 km from Cumbum.
