The hill station of Munnar in Kerala’s Idukki district is often referred to as the ‘Kashmir of the south’. A picturesque land that is a favourite destination of travellers, Munnar’s attractions include the cool weather and lush greenery. There are several places of interest in the region as well as a number of resorts and homestays.
One of the curiosities in Munnar is Raj Bhavan. Everyone has heard about the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, which is the official residence of the Governor. But the Raj Bhavan in Munnar is a resort owned by the Tourism Department.
Located at Devikulam, Munnar’s Raj Bhavan was built as a summer palace for the kings who once ruled the land. Later, the British took over the building and subsequently, it came into the possession of the Tourism Department under the state government.
Ironically, even though the name of the resort is Raj Bhavan, no Governor has stayed here so far.
