Thooval waterfall in Idukki getting a makeover to attract visitors

Idukki charms travellers with numerous picturesque hills, valleys and waterfalls. During the monsoon, the waterfalls come alive with renewed vigour, cascading down the mountain and providing a feast for the eyes. Among them, Thooval waterfall near Nedumkandam is witnessing developmental works aimed at attracting more visitors.

Thooval waterfall is located near Manjappara and Eettithoppu in Nedumkandam panchayat and descending from a great height, it resembles a milky froth. You can reach the waterfalls taking the Eettithoppu, Manjappara or Ezhukumvayal route. However, the final two-km stretch is unmotorable and visitors have to trek the distance on foot through farmlands and descend a hill to reach the waterfall.

Apart from the main waterfall that plunges from a height in several steps, there is another waterfall that makes its way down between the rocks. The waters of Thooval flow to the Chinnar and Periyar Rivers.

New projects

The authorities, realizing the potential of Thooval waterfall as a tourist hotspot, have launched developmental works in the area. It is also pointed out that a village tourism project linking Thooval and Kaithode waterfalls can turn the area into a major tourism destination.

At present, small bridges are being built to enable visitors to walk above the Thooval waterfall. The work is carried out under the village tourism project of the Nedumkandam panchayat which aims to lure more visitors to tourism spots in rural areas.

Works amounting to Rs 30 lakh are planned, including a concrete walkway for Rs 6 lakh which would take visitors right near the waterfall. Moreover, a new bridge above the waterfall will offer a stunning view of the area. Meanwhile, small bridges planned under the project have already been completed at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. Construction of protective walls and washroom complex also has started.

The development works were inaugurated by block panchayat president Reji Panachikkal at a function presided over by vice-president Juby Aji.
