A picturesque spot is always a favourite among travel lovers. With tourism centres in Kerala opening following the easing of lockdown restrictions, visitors are rushing to such places. However, many of the tourists are choosing destinations near their homes as the threat posed by COVID-19 has not fully subsided. In fact, people have identified new attractions in the state and Meenuliyanpara is among them.
Located around 3,500 feet above sea level, the charming Meenuliyanpara is adjacent to Pattayakkudi in Vannapuram panchayat near Thodupuzha in Idukki district. Thick forest covers two acres at the topmost part of this tourism centre. There are numerous lushly-growing trees and pretty brooks, adding to the attraction of the spot.
Visitors prefer to enjoy the refreshing breeze on the hilltop as well as the trek through the forest. From the top of the rock, you can even view the Munnar region, Adimali and Malayattoor Church.
An interesting fact about Meenuliyanpara is that a tunnel of the Lower Periyar power house project passes below the rock. The total length of the tunnel is, in fact, 16 km.
Meenuliyanpara also draws many adventure seekers. Climbing the hill here is not much difficult and the place is accessible around the year. However, the ideal time for a visit is the monsoon time as the scenery would be vibrant. Moreover, the sight of mist spreading everywhere amid the rain is indescribable. The place also used to attract foreign tourists before the lockdown.
Myths and legends
There are several local legends related to the place. According to one story, the Pandava princes had lived at Meenuliyanpara during their exile and it had offered them a good hiding place. It was also the spot where fish (‘Meen’ in Malayalam) from the Periyar River had landed, says another legend.
Moreover, remains of dolmens can be seen at Meenuliyanpara which indicate the historical importance of the place.
