Farms offer a refuge close to nature for people leading hectic lives. There are farms on the banks of the Vembanad Lake which not only grow typical Kerala crops but also provide luxurious accommodation and serve sumptuous traditional cuisine for guests. One such farm offering a royal treat is Philipkutty's Farm at Vechoor in Kottayam district of Kerala.

At Philipkutty's Farm, visitors can enjoy the gentle breeze from the lake, stroll in the lush coconut grove and banana plantation and relish tasty dishes prepared by the hosts.

Extending to 35 acres on an island of a mere 750 acres area, Philipkutty's Farm adopts sustainable farming methods. Crops grown include not only coconut and banana but also nutmeg and others. Scenic views of the backwaters spread before guests from the verandah of each cottage at the farm, which is the ideal destination for a relaxed holiday.

The traditional food, prepared by the family that runs the farm, includes dishes made with fresh fish. Guests can also learn some lessons in Syrian Christian cooking from the family.

All the waterfront villas at the farm have been carefully built to ensure the privacy of guests. The first villa, designed in the traditional Kerala style by the Swiss architect Karl Damschen, can accommodate two to three persons. The other villas were designed by Thomas Dominic and have separate bedrooms. These villas also have a living room and a veranda facing the Vembanad Lake. Every villa has facilities such as TV, hot water and Wi-Fi.

Guests can take a boat ride on the lake to enjoy the sunset and watch the numerous species of birds. During the main season, the farm can also arrange a fishing rod. Yet another attraction is a yoga class for relaxation. Believers can visit the nearby religious places too.
