So what is special about the hilltop at Thevarmala? Well, it gives a chance to be in the midst of thick forests and provide view to a whole range of bluish-green mountains around even while functioning as a tourist spot with a countryside air and good facilities to spend your day.
Two kilometres up Kodencheri town in Kozhikode district of upstate Kerala, Thevarmala gifts the visitor with the charm of the Western Ghats. It has locations where the traveller can take in the beauty of both sunrise and sunset.
Atop the hills are piles of boulders and rocks. Added to them are trees with thick vines, adding to the thrill of adventurists. Thevarmala retains the remnants of its wild past, as one can still see dens once occupied by wild animals. Visitors say it’s a unique experience from there to see sunrise.
Thevarmala provides a trekking stretch spanning 3 km. It has ponds that won't dry up in severest of summers. The place is rich with birds and butterflies.
Of late, Thevarmala has a nature-lovers' tourism package, courtesy an initiative by young Anas Rahman and his ten-member team that runs a Tribes of Samsara travel company at Farok near Kozhikode.
The initiative is called Bodhi Campsite, which provides for tents pitched in close rows on the Thevarmala hilltop. At the farm of local resident Parakkal George, it has also treehouses to view sunset. Evenings of the day-and-night stay can be spent leisurely swaying up and down on the swings for tourists.
The Bodhi Campsite provides both food and accommodation. It also arranges jeeps for tourists wanting to visit scenic neighbourhoods such as Tusharagiri and Arippara.
