Drive along one of India's most beautiful forest road

Travelling to a place blessed with abundant natural beauty gives you immense energy. Sights like the greenery on both sides of the road and gurgling streams soothes the eyes as well as mind. There are a number of destinations which offer an escape from the mad rush of the cities and the Chalakudy-Valparai-Pollachi road is among them.

The 172-km stretch passes through one of the most picturesque rainforests in India. You can travel any number of times along this stretch but won't grow weary of the sights as new views would appear during each visit. The ghat road from Pollachi in Tamil Nadu to Chalakudy in Kerala via Valaparai remains covered with mist most of the time and sees regular rainfall, offering a thrilling drive. The forest stretch from Pollachi to Valparai, Malakappara and Vazhachal is also a treat to the senses.

There are 42 hairpin bends on the road from Pollachi to Valparai and several more from Valparai to Chalakudy. The path from Vazhachal to Malakkappara can be termed a green tunnel. This area on the banks of the Chalakudy river is covered with thick forest and the only signs of human habitation are some isolated tribal hamlets.

Numerous photo opportunities appear before travellers along this route, which attracts visitors during all seasons. It has been suggested that in case it is promoted properly, the path has the potential to be considered among the top tourism corridors in the world.

Things to remember

Vehicles are allowed on the Vazhachal-Malakkappara stretch only from 6 am to 6 pm. As the forest is teeming with wildlife, drive cautiously.

Check-posts at Vazhachal and Malakkappara provide necessary instructions to travellers. If these directives are followed, visitors can relish a great trip through the forest.
