Kothamangalam: It is a feast of sights atop Ayyappanmudi that stands majestically kissing the skies. Anyone can easily trek to the enchanting hill ranges. These sights are not anywhere remote, but in Kothamangalam municipality itself. A mere five kilometers journey from the town takes you to the foot of the skyscraper, Ayyappanmudi hills. Once you climb the hills, you are in for wonderful sights. Ayyapanmudi is a wonder spot—the undefiled beauty of the place lies in its tough rocky terrain and lush green forest. The rocky hillock owes the name Ayyapanmudi to the Lord Ayyappa temple situated at the summit of the rocky terrain. The hill ranges extend from the temple courtyard to the foot of the Nadukani hill. The lone temple atop the rock gives the adventurous journey the soothing feel of a pilgrimage. The temple is open to devotees only on the first of every month. Rocks clusters lying spread one after another greet you there. Its highlight is that one is able to walk atop the hill ranges sprawling over a thousand acre area. The rocks are not slippery and hence one can climb up the rocks with least effort. The glimpse of the green velvety Malayaattoor mountain ranges when viewed from the hilltop is breathtaking. The refreshingly cool breeze bids farewell to tourists who stays on to see the sunset. As one walks down the rocky ranges, the rustling sound from the Pooyamkutti-Idamalyar forests fills the ears. The rocks that lie scattered within the three kilometer circumference of Ayyapanmudi is a major attraction. When viewed from a distance, the rock cluster seems like a reclining herd of elephants. Clouds gliding above the huge rocks and gurgling brooks beneath is a wondrous sight. Another attractive thing to note is the unending sight of green forests at the foot of the hill. Besides this, monk chambers and caves abound the mountain crevices. There is a pond in Ayyappanmudi temple premises atop the hill which never runs dry. Tourists flock to this area to enjoy their holidays. Not just adventure loving youth, but families including little children and aged people come to Ayyappanmudi.
