Wayanad is a mountain district situated about 115 kms northeast of Kozhikkode en route to Mysore at an altitude of 2,100 mts above mean sea level. It is often referred to as the ’fragrant land of Kerala’ for its forest produce of coffee, tea, cardamom, pepper and rubber. Pepper grown especially in Pulpally and Vythiri has a unique taste and fragrance. This busy mountain district is blessed with cool climate and sylvan valleys filled with spicy fragrance. The forests here are among the most beautiful locales of Kerala.  The region has a wealth of diverse species of plants and animals and is of great interest to nature lovers. Wayanad is still a large habitat for tribal population with fascinating lifestyles. Historians contend that civilisation existed in several parts of Wayanad at least a thousand years before Christ. Relics of the new Stone Age civilisation can be seen in the Edakkal caves near Ambukuthimala.
