Mallu Traveller's vlog on coronavirus isolation ward goes viral

Shakir Subhan, a travel freak who is popular among netizens as 'Mallu Traveller,' has in his latest vlog posted a video of his experiences in the coronavirus isolation ward which has gone viral.

Shakir had set out on a global trip with his bike in October last year. After crossing Iran and having travelled through Azerbaijan, Shakir was entering Georgia when he was stopped at the border. By then the coronavirus alert had been sounded around the world and the Georgian authorities did not allow him into their country as he had visited places affected by the virus.

Shakir had no option but to take a flight from Azerbaijan to Kannur via Dubai.

An adventure traveller who familiarized Keralites with several offbeat destinations, Shakir has travelled to several countries with very little money. He made this possible by hitchhiking. Shakir also shot videos of his trips and when they were shared on the social media, he became a star among the youth.

His latest trip was a global tour on a two-wheeler which was abandoned midway following the COVID-19 outbreak.

When Shakir landed at the Kannur International Airport, health authorities there enquired about the countries he had visited. As those places were COVID-19-affected regions, Shakir was instructed to move to an isolation ward.

He soon found himself in an ambulance that took him from the airport to Kannur government hospital. Shakir cooperated wholeheartedly with the Health personnel and shot videos of his entire journey and the time spent in the isolation ward. In the vlog, Shakir repeats that everything should be taken with a positive mindset and that all negatives need to be shunned.

The video posted by Shakir also shows the efficient mechanism put in place by Kerala Government and Health Department to deal with the issue. Shakir subsequently tested negative for COVID-19 and was discharged from hospital.

In his video, Shakir says he wore a mask and helmet during the entire bike trip, which played a major role in preventing the disease. Moreover, he remained confident – a quality that has been in full display in Kerala during the crisis.

Concluding the video, Shakir says every person who visited a COVID-19-affected country should report the matter to the authorities. They should not go directly home from the airport but to a hospital. “Follow each instruction of the health personnel,” he says.

Incidentally, Shakir’s vlog was noticed by K K Shailaja, the Health Minister of Kerala, and she expressed her appreciation.
