Evenings in Changanassery are incomplete without snacks at this shop

The Bharat coffee house inside Changanassery market is a paradise of delicious tea-time snacks. As one enters the eatery, the eyes are immediately drawn to the glass cupboard packed with piping hot snacks. Bunches of bananas, hung from the ceiling beckons foodies into the coffee house to try out their special snacks. Crispy banana fritters made with ripe and juicy bananas, dal fritters, urad dal vadas, onion fritters, sukhiyan made with boiled green grams, jaggery and grated coconut, neyyappam and banana bonda are some of the snacks served here. Though all kinds of food are available here, the eatery is known for its snacks.

Rajasekharan Nair opened the Bharat Coffee House as a small hotel at Mathumoola in Changanassery in 1988. Later, it was shifted to the market road, close to the police quarters. A few years ago, the eatery was shifted to the current location inside the market.

Piping hot banana fritters are served from 5.30 am to 7 in the evening. The hotel is often crowded with people who queue up to get their favourite snacks packed. The eatery sells a whopping 1500 banana fritters a day, with other snacks racing close behind. The special banana fritter sold here has a crispy white coloured coating. The batter is prepared by adding more amount of rice flour and less quantity of all purpose flour. Artificial colourants are not added in these delicious banana fritters.
