Thiruvananthapuram: The authorities of the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo are trying all methods to keep the animals cool and comfortable in the severe heatwave. Pedestal fans have been arranged in the snake cages, while bears are given frozen fruit treats. The hippopotamus gets a full–time cold shower, and the animals are treated to refreshing watermelons and cucumbers at regular intervals. The diet of carnivores like tigers and lions now includes stress-relieving supplements besides the regular beef.

Separate muddy ponds have been made for the deer, and water is sprayed into the cages of all the animals at intervals from 11 am to 3 pm. Dr Nikesh Kiran, the head veterinarian at the zoo said that proper facilities have been arranged at the veterinary centre inside the zoo to give the animals quick treatment in case they suffer from heat strokes.

Monkeys, too, need lots of water to drink and bathe, so an adequate water supply has been ensured inside their cages. Bears are given frozen fruit treats. Water is constantly sprayed into the cages of migratory birds that migrate to colder places during the summer.
