Planning a trek this monsoon? These are the five things you have to keep in mind

Monsoon adds a special charm to the hills. A stream here, a bunch of flowers there and birds taking off as you surprise them – a trek up the various hills around the state is a must this season. And equally important are safety precautions. Onmanorama gives you five tips to make your trip fun filled.

1) For protection from rain

An umbrella is colorful and a must for the plains during the monsoon. But, higher up in the hills, it becomes cumbersome to handle, especially in the heavy winds. Go in for a poncho or a raincoat - and you get to keep your hands free on a slippery trail. Invest in a good quality waterproof backpack. carrying zip-lock bags for your electronic gadgets and foodstuff is a good idea.

2) About trails

Keep to the existing trails. Monsoon is not the right time to cut new trails. Always be on the alert – the rocks and the track could get slippery.

3) Gear

Your gear needs a special attention. We already spoke about raincoats and bags. Ensure you pack a small medical kit for emergencies. You should also pack some salt or anti-leech socks while you go out. Invest in good quality trekking shoes. Always carry a map, the electronic gadgets may fail you.

4) Local guide

Always do your home work – read up about the terrain and the conditions before you leave. If it is an impulsive trip, do not shy away from talking to the locals. They are the best people to tell you about the situations on the ground.
