New Delhi: The recent horrific train accident in Odisha has highlighted the need for insurance while travelling. However, many passengers are unaware that the Indian Railway already offers travel insurance at very low cost for travellers who book tickets online.

The one-time premium amount for the insurance is a mere 35 paise for which an insurance amount of up to Rs 10 lakh is available. But, strangely, few passengers opt for this insurance even though the scheme was implemented back in 2016.

Insurance amount
Dependents of people who have lost their lives in train accidents and passengers who become permanently disabled will receive Rs 10 lakh. Meanwhile, a person who suffers partial disablement would be eligible for Rs 7.5 lakh. All passengers who suffer injuries will be paid Rs two lakh for meeting hospital expenses.

Incidents covered
The insurance scheme covers incidents such as derailment, collision, terrorist attack, violence during robbery and arson. Passengers who fall from the train will also receive the insurance amount. The scheme is implemented by Liberty General Insurance and SBI General Insurance.

How to opt for insurance cover
While booking train tickets on IRCTC’s website click on ‘Yes, and I accept’ below ‘Travel Insurance.’ When this is done, all passengers booking under a PNR number will be covered under the insurance.

The policy details would soon be sent as mail and SMS. Click on the link and submit the name of the nominee. If no name of nominee is given the claim, if any, would be settled in favour of the legal heir of the passenger.
