Cholera is a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration.
In April 2025, Kerala reported the death of a 63-year-old man due to the disease in Thiruvananthapuram.
It spreads through contaminated water or food, particularly in areas with poor sanitation.
Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, vomiting, muscle cramps and rapid dehydration.
To stay safe, drink boiled and cooled water, avoid stale, uncovered food, wash veggies and fruits before constumption and maintain strict personal hygiene.
Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) help treat dehydration caused by cholera. Antibiotics, zinc supplements and a nutritious diet are also incorporated into the treatment.
