As part of the Cochin Carnival, Fort Kochi marks midnight with the burning of a towering Pappanji effigy.
Rooted in a Portuguese tradition, the ritual symbolises letting go of the past and embracing new beginnings.
The term Pappanji is believed to be derived from the Portuguese word papão, meaning 'old man'.
Inspired by Fort Kochi, the tradition has in recent years spread to several other parts of Kerala.
This year, Kovalam too will join the celebrations with the burning of a Pappanji to welcome the New Year.
