Here is a hatchback from Ford that follows its sedan Aspire. Usually, automobile manufacturers launch their hatchback versions first and then follow them up with their sedan versions.
However, Ford has gone against this convention by launching its sedan, the Aspire, first and then bringing in the hatchback version. It is immaterial whether the Figo hatchback came after the sedan or not, what matters is that the car is creating ripples in the automobile circle.
Head-to-toe makeover
The new Figo is not just different in terms of the looks from the old one. This one is built on Ford’s latest B572 platform. Ford Ka, one of Europe’s best small cars too shares the same platform.
Thanks to this new platform, the latest Figo is ultramodern, safe and comfortable.
Design
The Figo looks like an Italian car, mainly because of its front grill which owes its design lineage to Maserati, Aston Martin or Fiat. The highlight of this car is its grill which makes it look really beautiful. Those who criticize Ford for borrowing the grill design from Italian carmakers should also appreciate the fact that the company has no qualms about picking up the finer design elements from the Italians. Despite the Ford being an American company, its Figo is entirely European in design.
The Practicality Factor
Though it is a shrunk version of the Aspire, the rear end does not look drastically chopped off. From the sides, the car looks muscular and the design flows smoothly to its rear end. The roofline is also beautiful. The alloy wheels stand out thanks to their design and the rear end is pretty simple. The chrome garnish that is available as an accessory adds to the overall elegance of the car. Rub rails with chrome linings are also available as an accessory. However the parking sensors come as accessory even in the high end model and that is a bit of a letdown. Even the rear end camera does not come as a standard fitment.
The Interiors
The moment you step inside this car, its interiors give you a feeling of power. Seats are comfortable and are in black trim. Other elements of luxury including automatic air conditioning, docking stations for mobiles and sync and lip feature are all available in the Figo. However, one may wonder if the number pads on the stereo are really inevitable. There are two bottle holders each on the front doors and there are enough cubby holes for storage.
The Engine
The new Figo comes with two engine options – a 1.2 litre petrol and a 1.5 litre diesel unit. Both have undergone extensive makeovers. The petrol version returns 18.16 kilometers per litre while the diesel manages 25.83 kilometers per litre of fuel.
Automatic
Automatic gear box is available in the petrol variant but the engine of the automatic version is different. It is a 1.5 litre unit that dishes out 112 PS. The six speed power shift automatic unit uses shift dual clutch technology that is usually seen in Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda vehicles.
Safety
No other hatchback in this segment offers six airbags. ABS, ESP, Hill Launch Assist and Perimeter Alarm that ensures safe parking, all take care of the car’s safety aspects.
Behind the wheels
One of Figo’s unique advantages has always been its excellent drivability and the new engines have gone further ahead in that direction. The new diesel engine is almost as silent as a petrol unit. There is no turbo lag at all and it is worth mentioning that the gear ratios are perfect for both city driving as well as long highway hauls. Another positive aspect of the Figo is its excellent suspension that ensures a plush ride and awesome handling.
Premium hatch
For those who seek to enjoy a premium hatchback, the Figo will realise their dreams. It comes in seven colours including sparkling gold and deep impact blue that are striking in appearance. The new Figo is available from Rs 4.30 lakh onwards.
