Xiaomi Redmi 5A vs Redmi 4A: quick comparison

Xiaomi Redmi 5A, tagged as the successor of Redmi 4A, was launched in China in October 2017. Priced CNY 599 (roughly Rs 6,000), the phone is available for pre-order via the company’s official site and other major e-commerce sites. There is no word on its availability in India.

Redmi 5A comes with an all-new MIUI 9 out-of-the-box version and supports up to 256 GB of expandable storage. Priced Rs 5,999, Redmi 4A is one of the top-sellers in the Indian smartphone market.

Specifications and features

The company pitches the phone’s battery, which is claimed to offer 8-day longevity, as a major highlight of Xiaomi Redmi 5A. The phone packs a 3000 mAh battery. On the other end, Redmi 4A packs a bigger battery of 3140 mAh.

The new phone is made of a metal-like matte texture which, as claimed by the company, is ‘lighter than the metal.' The phone weighs 137 grams and is slightly heavier compared to 4A which weighs 132 gm.

While both the phones come with 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display, there is a difference in its pixel density. Redmi 4A boasts of a pixel density of 296ppi (pixel per inch) while the new phone comes with 294ppi.

Both phones are powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC processor, clocked at 1.4GHz and coupled with 2 GB RAM. Redmi 5A runs on Android Nougat (7.1) whereas 4A runs on Android Marshmallow (6.0).

Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with 16 GB of in-built storage which is further expandable via memory card (up to 256 GB). On the other hand, Redmi 4A comes with two internal storage options (16/32 GB) and supports expandable storage up to 128 GB.

Like its predecessor, Redmi 5A sports a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP camera on the front for taking selfies and to enable video-calling facilities. The rear camera is loaded with f/2.2 aperture and has a number of modes like burst, panorama, and HDR.

The 5A's MIUI 9 out-of-the-box version comes with a handful of features such as home screen enhancements, smart assistant, image search, and smart app launcher, among others. It also features a quick reply and notification management and split screen for multitasking. Redmi 4A is loaded with MIUI 8.

As far as connectivity is concerned, both the phones support 4G with VoLTE. Other connectivity features include GPRS/EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Micro-USB.

Final Verdict

Apart from a few design changes like rounded corners, there aren’t any major feature upgrade in the new model compared to the predecessor.
