'Solar fan cap' – a caring son's gift to his farmer father to beat summer

Abhinav’s ‘solar fan cap’ was exhibited at an expo organised at his school and was noticed by many farmers and labourers who work in the pineapple fields.

Muvattupuzha: It was the ideal gift for someone close to you. When summer is peaking, Jiju Joseph of Puthenpura, Ayavana, who spends several hours under the hot sun in his pineapple field, has received a ‘solar fan cap’ designed by his son Abhinav exclusively for him.

Abhinav, a seventh standard student at St Little Teresa’s High School, was moved by the sight of his father toiling all day in the heat growing pineapple in a field he had taken on lease. With a keen interest in science, Abhinav pondered over finding a way to give some relief to his father.

Finally, he decided to make a ‘solar fan cap.’ The designing and making took nearly a month, for which he mainly used parts of disused toys. He first took a cap and attached a small solar panel to it. Then, the portion of an old emergency lamp was fixed, at the end of which a fan was connected.

The breeze from the fan can be conveniently directed to various areas of the face. As soon as the wearer steps out under the sun, the fan starts moving. “The fan is a big relief. It gives good breeze and is a great relief in the hot weather,” said Jiju, praising his son’s caring and thoughtful gift.

Abhinav’s ‘solar fan cap’ was exhibited at an expo organised at his school and was noticed by many farmers and labourers who work in the pineapple fields. Realising its benefits, they too have asked Abhinav to build the fan for them.

The young scientist had earlier developed a cycle working with solar energy. Jiju said that he would give all support to his son in the scientific endeavours. Abhinav’s teachers in school too have recognized his talents and give him all encouragement.
