Thiruvananthapuram: Lovers of independent cinema in Malayalam thronged Aries Plex theater complex here to watch their most anticipated film of the year - Sexy Durga - on Thursday. The film was screened before a packed audience, mostly youngsters.
The screening was arranged as part of raising funds for Kazhcha Indie Film Festival, a parallel event to be held here next month on the sidelines of IFFK.
Director Sanalkumar Sasidharan told Onmanorama that the unusual screening, the film's Kerala premiere, was a protest against the neglect meted out to the film by the mainstream film festivals.
The crowd comprised of Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Murali Gopy, lead actress Rajshri Deshpande.
Adoor said he was happy to see the crowd that spent Rs 500 per ticket to watch the movie. He hailed Sasidharan's uncompromising stance for good films as a service to the Malayalam cinema.
Adoor reiterated that the I&B ministry's decision to drop Sexy Durga from the Indian Panorama surpassing the jury's selection was unprecedented and needs to be protested.
