Chengannur: The CPM has alleged that BJP workers are bribing voters ahead of the yet-to-be announced Chengannur bypoll. It has filed a police complaint stating that the BJP workers were giving money to women, children and youth from the economically backward communities.

The complaint stated that amounts ranging from Rs 2000 to Rs 5000 were being distributed to the residents of Angadimalakkal Colony, which falls within the Chengannur municipality limits.

The leader of BJP's ex-servicemen co-ordination cell was spearheading the money distribution, it was alleged.

Though the election notification for the Chengannur bypoll has not been issued, the ruling CPM-led LDF, the UDF opposition spearheaded by the Congress and the BJP-led NDA have announced their candidates for the seat.

Congress leader D Vijayakumar is the UDF candidate and CPM Alappuzha district secretary Saji Cherian is representing the LDF. Former BJP state president P S Sreedharan Pillai is the NDA candidate.
