Independent film fest to run parallel with IFFK

Films of Kazhcha Indie Fest will be screened at Lenin Balavadi at Vazhuthacaud.

Thiruvananthapuram: In what seems to be a dissenting note to the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), members of the Kaazhcha Film Society and Nirav Art Movies have planned a separate film festival parallel to the grand movie feast of Kerala to he held in Thiruvananthapuram in December. Office-bearers of the Kazhcha Film Forum have conformed the reports.

The parallel fest, to be held during the first four days of the IFFK, has been titled, Kazhcha Indie Fest (KIF). Films will be screened at Lenin Balavadi at Vazhuthacaud from December 8 to 11. The IFFK will be held from December 8 to 15.

As many as 12 movies from Malayalam and other Indian languages, which were noticed at various national and international fora, will be screened at the KIF.

The parallel fest is being organized in protest against the neglect meted out to independent filmmakers by the Kerala Chalachitra Academy and the IFFK, said Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, film director and secretary of Kazhcha Film Forum.

Sanal Kumar alleged that the films division and Chalachitra Academy were doing very little to encourage films of artistic value apart from organizing the IFFK.

He added that KIF is not born out of enmity towards IFFK and that it should be viewed as a creative protest.

The inaugural film at KIF will be 'Karie' by Shanavas Naranipuzha.
