Medical college flouts norms in Jisha’s post-mortem, assigns task to PG student

Alappuzha: The post-mortem on the body of the law student who was raped and killed near Perumbavoor was conducted by a PG student at the Alappuzha Medical College, in violation of the norms, which require a team of doctors to conduct autopsy in murder cases involving sexual harassment.

The report of the post-mortem held on April 29 was handed over to the police only on May 4.

The medical college had four doctors in the ranks of professor and associate professor available to conduct the post-mortem but the task was assigned to a medic.

After the news of the gruesome murder and the apathetic probe broke out in social media, authorities in the forensic department in the Medical College held an emergency meeting on Tuesday. Though a cover-up was suggested to make it look like the post-mortem was done by a group of surgeons, several doctors objected to it. They wanted the report to say that the post-mortem was done by the student and monitored by an associate professor.

Post-mortems in cases involving sexual harassment are supposed to be done by a group of surgeons or under the watch of a police surgeon.
