Why pull your hair out over the appropriate hairdo when you can listen to tips from an expert -- the ace makeup artist Ambika Pillai herself. She has worked on the hairstyles of most actors in the Malayalam film industry. Actress Parvathy’s hairdo is special for her. "I like Parvathy’s hair the best. I first saw her after ‘Bangalore Days’ when her hairstyle was much talked about. When I saw her, her hair had grown a bit longer. She wanted it to be cut short again. But the movie she was about to act in demanded that she have long hair. So I told her not to shorten the existing length. It would be difficult to attach an extension to short hair. I set her hair that day without reducing too much of its length," the stylist revealed.
Personal styles often reflect one's personality. Ambika's interactions with the outspoken actress laid bare this truth. "Parvathy is a very bold woman. She also knows how to enrich her bold attitude with the clothes she wears and her hairstyle. She acted as a woman who pursued her man in another movie. Like the character, her hair too lived a life of its own," Ambika noted.
Offering valuable tips, the expert hairstylist said, "Each person has a unique kind of hair. Some have hair that is very oily. No amount of shampooing will make it dry. Whereas some have hair that is thin and dry. It is not necessary to wash hair every day; three or four times a week will do."
Hair too needs proper nurturing. "Whenever shampoo is used on hair, a conditioner too must be used compulsorily. It is good to do a hair spa once a week to improve the health of hair. After oil massage, wrapping a towel soaked in hot water is very effective," she advised, adding "A shampoo brush makes the use of shampoo on hair more effective. Massaging with a shampoo brush after applying shampoo removes dirt and rejuvenates the scalp. It also increases blood circulation."
Several factors need to be considered while deciding on the hairstyle. "The best hairstyle for a person can be arrived at only after taking into consideration the nature of their body, the kind of clothes they wear, thickness of their hair and even the kind of career they are in. If the hair is long and thick, a layer framing the face can be cut without reducing length. The rest of the hair can be maintained as such by trimming alone. Side layer suits those with a round or oval face. Short hair suits those with a square or triangular face. Those with a long face can cut hair, length on par with the cheeks and curl it. Those who have big foreheads can have some fringes falling onto the forehead. Those with thin hair can attach magnificent extensions. These can be clipped on and are more beautiful than real hair," Ambika explained.
