All he wanted was a signature house. And NRI Abdullah got his wish fulfilled when he put up a sprawling 12,000 sq ft structure on 52 cents of land in Kadavathoor, Mahe.
A blend of traditional Kerala and the modern, Abdulla’s house has his style stamped on it. It’s showy, spacious and lavish in style. The family has to play host to a whole lot of people whenever they come home on holiday. Hence, the owner decided to oblige all while maintaining the essential privacy of the family. The structure was therefore built in two blocks. The public space comes at the front. A sit-out, a verandah and an office room have been built into this space. The residential area is to its back where all the main rooms are situated.
This style ensures that the family gets to maintain its privacy. A passage in between connects the two areas. A show wall in CNC jaali work covers the passage and hides it from public view.
The roofs are a combination of flat and sloping styles. Certain portions of the house have flat roofs over truss with shingles covering the top. This keeps the rooms below cool and comfortable. Besides, the space below the roof has been converted into an open hall, lavish on space.
The cladding tiles on all pillars of the car porch are an attractive feature. The car porch is a designer’s delight. It’s spacious and elaborately designed. The sit-out would easily be mistaken for the lobby of an ornate star hotel. The office space has been provided to its right. Open the arched front door and you are in a lobby, which takes you to the living quarters at the back. The lobby look is highlighted by floor tiles in the linear pattern.
The interiors have been specially designed and the style is out of the ordinary. The style is elaborate, sophisticated and ornate, reminding you of those classic houses. The warm-toned lightings inside enrich the stylish ambiance. The teak woodwork for furnishing is again a signature design. The teak work is interspersed with plywood-veneer. All the major rooms have nano-white flooring. The floor can be easily cleaned and the white heightens the visual effect of the space. There is wooden tile flooring in some areas.
The drawing room oozes opulence. One of the walls has been highlighted with wooden tiles. The chic sofas in white leather go well with the color tones of the room. A teapoy in nano white and another wall in wooden paneling which houses the TV unit complete the ambiance of the space.
The elaborately designed chandeliers and expensive light fittings have all been sourced from abroad. The black leather sofas in the family living add a dash of class to the room. A well-designed wall paneling holds the TV unit here. A spiral staircase goes up from this space to the floor up. The handrail is a study in elegance with its combination of glass and steel. A small computer table sits under the staircase space.
A 10-seating dining table, flown in from the US, is the highlight of the dining space. A showcase on one side of the wall is another design element. The washroom has been assigned to a corner of the dining area. A CNC jaali work partition keeps this space enclosed.
There are six bedrooms with three on each floor. The bedrooms are large, roomy and airy. The false ceiling and the lights within highlight the décor of the rooms. One of the bedrooms is special in that it has lights fitted into its headrest board which goes right up to the ceiling. This is an elaborately designed adornment. There’s quite a lot of woodwork on the ceilings. Plywood-veneer has also been used. All the bedrooms have attached bathrooms. They also enjoy the luxury of dressing areas, wardrobes and study tables. A circular-shaped wardrobe in another bedroom looks fetching.
The kitchen enjoys a white theme with its countertop in nano white. A breakfast counter is an added feature. The storage units are all in plywood with white polish.
The most attractive feature of the house is its elaborate landscaping. The first design, which catches one’s attention is a well designed like a huge basket. Worked in cement, it’s a beautifully crafted structure. There are Arabian style statues all over.
Another attraction is the huge Arabian style water jar. It rests on a patch of green beside a small pond with water jetting out of its spout into the pond. All the seating arrangements in the garden are in cement plastering. A granite pergola in the garden is another attraction. The natural stone with live green peeping around completes the charm of the garden. On one side of the house stands a double-storied garage, which looks like the house in miniature.
The house by night is a grand sight. Bathed in lights, it looks surreal. Abdullah only had to wish for what he had in his dreams. He got all of them.
