A thirty-year-old Keralite has created history by becoming the first Keralite woman cadet to join the Australian Defense Force.
Ramya Ramesh, a native of Thrissur, alongside nine other feisty women attached to the Bravo 15 Platoon comprising 40 cadets, marched out on Saturday, showing that they are as good as or even better than men.
Proud to serve her adopted nation, Ramya had successfully completed a rigorous physical training program before being inducted into the Army. Though there are Keralite army men in the Australian Defense Force, this is the first time a Keralite woman got the opportunity to serve in any role in the country’s army.
Daughter of Nottathu Krishnakumar and Ramadevi of Ponganamkadu, Ramya did her schooling at Government Higher Secondary School, Villadam. Later, she pursued MSc and MBA graduation from Vimala College and Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur.
She first worked with an oil company in the Gulf before migrating to Australia. Just one-and-a-half-years after obtaining the citizenship, she joined the Australian military.
Her husband Ramesh, a member of the Unnichenattu family in Perumbavoor, works as an engineer with the Riverina Oils and Bio Energy located at Wagga Wagga in Australia’s New South Wales. The couple has three children, Sreehari, Shravan, and Shivani.
