Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court has summoned a group of people and people’s representatives from Attingal here for culling the stray dogs who killed an old man in the area in April.
Attingal municipality chairman M. Pradeep, Chirayinkeezhu block panchayat member Manju Pradeep, Kizhuvilam panchayat members Sreekandan, Bijukumar and Shajahan have been asked to appear before the court on July 17 along with a few others who are working against the stray dog menace.
The people’s representatives joined the dog hunt after Kunjukrishnan (85) was mauled to death by a pack of strays at Mamom on April 7. The Attingal police arrested Manju Pradeep, Sreekadan, Bijukumar and Shanavas the next day based on a complaint received by the director general of police. Jose Maveli, Ranjan Varappuzha and other members of an association working for victims of stray dog menace were also arrested.
All of them were later let out on bail but now find themselves involved in a Supreme Court procedure.
Municipal chairman Pradeep, however, is clueless as to why he was served a notice when he was not involved in the case.
The Supreme Court served the notice on a petition filed by Nimitha Anand of Haryana through advocate Prashanth Bhushan. She alleges that a 2016 Supreme Court order about cruelty to animals has been violated at Attingal.
